The story of SELAH

SELAH is the mother (Portia) and daughter (Selah) collaboration which began as a brick and mortar store on Piedmont Avenue in Oakland, California on September of 2015. Previously, the location had been occupied their mother/grandmother, who owned "The Bee's Knees".

Selah began her career in retail from a very young age, due to the fact that she worked for her grandmother at "The Bee's Knees".  When Selah was presented with the offer of taking over the lease and starting her own retail business at this location, she and her mother discussed the ideas they had for a retail business. They decided that the store should feature a retro, 1950's style. That the inventory must be unique and not something carried at any of the big corporate chain stores. That they would focus on having fun and helping people of any gender, shape, and size, feel good about themselves, thus SELAH carries XS through 5XL and heels up to a size 16. Also, that the inventory be priced for every-day wear and that no item in store be priced above $100.00.

After almost three years, it was decided that the overhead of a brick and mortar store made it impossible to do all that they wanted SELAH to be able to do. Thus, on June 10th, 2018, the doors were closed and SELAH expanded to cyber-space. SELAH plans on continuing to engage in face-to-face interactions through pop-ups, vending at events, and creating its own events, as they feel that there is no replacement for live interactions. SELAH also plans to keep files on regular clients which includes a record of client's sizes in the different brands, thus reducing the necessity of returns.

SELAH also special orders "occasion-wear", such as Gatsby style, 1920's hand beaded gowns and will help plan events with just the right retro style.
